A Brief Description of Who We Are!
About The Murphysboro Park District

It might surprise you to learn that the Murphysboro Park District is the seventh-oldest park district in the State of Illinois. The district was organized by a city referendum in 1907 and currently is governed by a board of five volunteer commissioners, each elected for a six-year term. The Park District operates autonomously from the City of Murphysboro under the direction of the Board of Directors and has its own power to levy property taxes to support its programs.

It is the mission of the Murphysboro Park District “to provide recreational and leisure time opportunities to our community and surrounding area in unique, beautiful, historic, safe settings.”

Current Members of the Board of Commissioners:

  • Donald L. Brewer, President (term expires 2009)
  • William Center, Vice president (term expires 2011)
  • P. Michael Jones, Secretary/Treasurer (term expires 2013)
  • Scott Hale (term expires 2009)
  • C.J. Calandro (term expires 2013)

The Board meets regularly at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the Murphysboro Park District Recreation Center, located just outside of Riverside Park. Meetings are open to the public.

Newsflash

We’re pleased to announce that the grandstand at Riverside Park’s Chep Kessel Field and the Bandshell also at Riverside Park are being considered for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Both structures were built in the late 1930s as part of the Work Projects Admistration.
